Jim Uhlik, Founder/President
Jim Uhlik was born in Fremont, Nebraska to Delbert and Norma Uhlik, second oldest to a family of five brothers and one sister. Jim joined the Navy and served from 1979-1989, seeing combat during the first Gulf War. He earned his BA in Photography at Chabot College. For twenty years, Jim worked for Hayward Area Park and Recreation as a park worker and Supervisor. He began his career as the Castro Valley Santa now for 29 years ago. Jim is currently an active member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9601, where he currently serves as Service Officer and District 10 Chaplain. Previous positions with Post 9601 include Commander and Sr. Vice Commander.
Ethel Gilmore, Vice President
Ethel has dedicated her life to what she calls, “My Veterans,” children who need a little extra attention, and therapy dogs for veterans. “My Veterans” consist of any man or woman who has worn any US Miliary Branch Uniform and served this phenomenal country. Ethel’s motto, “I will make myself available to assist our veterans in whatever way possible.”
Her first contact with PAWS for Purple Hearts was when her late husband was offered an opportunity to have a trained companion many years ago.
Ethel is the widow of a veteran, mother-in-law of veterans and grandmother to an Active Duty Sailor, and 2 grandchildren Veterans.
Needless to say, Ethel is surrounded on all sides by the military.
When ELLM Foundation Founder & President, Jim Uhlik, told me about his dream, Ethel was more than willing to assist in any way she can. Ethel is honored and privileged to be able to serve with such a great group of volunteers.
Jacki Hoyt, Treasurer
Jacki was born in Harvey, IL to Joseph and Betty Schultz. She is number 4 in a family of 6 – 5 girls and one boy. She married in 1979 and has 2 children. She’s always been a volunteer – first as the chalk board eraser cleaner. Jacki has a BA degree in Liberal Studies with a Minor in English and a dual MBA in Marketing and Strategic Management. She has belonged to various organizations over the years including the PTA, School Site Council, and FAME. Currently, she serves as Sr Vice President/Secretary to the VFW Auxiliary to Castro Valley Post 9601 and Treasurer to ELLM Foundation. Jacki has been supporting Veteran causes for many years. ELLM gives her an opportunity to continue in her support of Veterans and their families.
